Why convert SKB to STL?
STL is the standard format for 3D printing and slicing software. If a working .skp was lost and only the .skb backup remains, converting it to .stl lets you send the geometry to a printer without rebuilding the model from scratch.
How to convert SKB to STL
SketchUp Pro APP
Copy the .skb, rename the copy to .skp, open it in SketchUp Pro, and go to File > Export > 3D Model and choose STL as the format.
About these formats
An SKB file is an automatic backup of a SketchUp 3D model, saved by SketchUp alongside your active .skp file. It holds the previous saved state of the model. To open it, make a copy, rename…
Open .SKB details →An STL file is a 3D model that describes a shape as a mesh of triangles. To view it, use Microsoft 3D Viewer (Windows) or Quick Look (macOS). To 3D-print it, open it in a slicer like…

- The
.skbis one save behind - it holds the state from before the last manual save, so recent edits may be missing. - Only solid geometry exports cleanly to STL; use the free Solid Inspector extension from the Extension Warehouse to find and fix holes or reversed faces before exporting.
- STL carries only triangle-mesh geometry - materials, textures, layer tags, and scene settings from the SketchUp model are not included.
