What to expect

  • .prc and .mobi are the same format; the .prc extension is a Palm OS artifact and Calibre treats both files identically.
  • DRM-protected .prc files (Amazon purchases) cannot be converted - Calibre detects the lock and refuses to proceed.
  • AZW3 files must be sideloaded via USB; Amazon's Send to Kindle no longer accepts .azw3 or .mobi attachments.

Is AZW3 better than PRC/MOBI for Kindle?
Yes, for any Kindle released after 2011. AZW3 supports CSS styling and embedded fonts; PRC/MOBI does not render these reliably.
Can I send the converted AZW3 to my Kindle wirelessly?
No - Amazon's Send to Kindle dropped support for .azw3 and .mobi. Connect your Kindle via USB and copy the file to its documents folder.
My PRC file came from Amazon. Can I convert it?
No. Amazon-purchased files are DRM-protected and Calibre will not process them; only DRM-free files from sources like Project Gutenberg can be converted.
What is the difference between AZW3 and AZW?
AZW is essentially MOBI with Amazon DRM; AZW3 (KF8) is a newer format with HTML5/CSS support but is not backward-compatible with Kindle 1 or 2.
