How to convert PPM to PGM
- Add your .PPM file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .PGM in a few seconds.
- Download your new .PGM file.
What to expect
- Color is permanently lost: a PGM stores one luminance value per pixel, so the original RGB channels cannot be recovered after conversion.
- Good tools use perceptual luminance weights (0.2126 R + 0.7152 G + 0.0722 B) rather than a plain average - greens appear lighter than blues in the output.
- Both PPM and PGM are uncompressed; the PGM will be roughly one-third the size of the source at 8-bit depth, but still larger than a compressed format such as PNG.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting PPM to PGM reduce quality?
It removes color but not sharpness - pixel count and spatial resolution stay the same. Within greyscale the conversion is lossless.
Can I convert the PGM back to PPM?
Tools like ImageMagick can write a PGM back to PPM, but the result is a greyscale image in a color container - the original colors are gone for good.
Why save as PGM rather than greyscale PNG?
PGM is required when a specific Netpbm-based tool or pipeline expects that exact format. For general sharing, greyscale PNG is smaller and more widely supported.
Is ppmtopgm available on Windows?
Not as a standalone binary; use ImageMagick on Windows instead, or install the
netpbm package inside WSL.
