Why convert OPUS to AMR?
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a compressed speech codec introduced by 3GPP in 1999 for 2G/3G mobile networks, operating at 4.75-12.2 kbit/s at narrowband 8 kHz quality. Opus, standardized in 2012, operates at up to 48 kHz with clearly better fidelity. Forcing Opus audio through AMR permanently discards most of its information, and the resulting .amr file plays on nothing outside legacy telephony infrastructure. The sensible alternatives are .mp3 or .wav.

- AMR encodes at 8 kHz narrowband; converting from Opus to AMR permanently discards most audio information and the result sounds noticeably worse.
- Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android do not open
.amrfiles natively - you would need to convert again to play the result anywhere. - The only situation where AMR output is justified is a legacy telephony gateway with no alternative input format.
