What to expect

  • Re-encoding is unavoidable - WMV uses Microsoft's proprietary codec, so some quality loss always occurs; a higher bitrate (e.g. 4000k for 1080p) keeps it closer to the source.
  • Broadcast metadata - including timecode, UMID, and multi-channel audio track assignments - stored in the MXF header is not carried over to WMV.
  • OP-Atom MXF files (Panasonic P2, Avid) split video and audio into separate files; load the full card folder in an NLE before converting.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting MXF to WMV lose quality?
Yes - it is a full re-encode, so some generation loss is unavoidable. Setting a higher bitrate (e.g. -b:v 4000k for 1080p) minimises the difference.
Why does my MXF file fail to convert or produce a blank video?
The codec inside the MXF may be unsupported, or the file may be OP-Atom (split-track format). Run ffmpeg -i input.mxf to check the codec, or use MediaInfo for a detailed readout.
Can I keep timecode from MXF in the WMV output?
No - WMV has no timecode field, so SMPTE timecode and other production metadata are discarded during conversion.
Should I convert to WMV or MP4?
MP4 is compatible with every modern device and platform; choose WMV only when a specific older system or client delivery spec requires it.
