What to expect

  • Re-encoding is always required: AVI cannot carry broadcast codecs, so video is decoded and re-encoded to Xvid or MPEG-4, causing some quality loss.
  • Professional MXF files often contain 4-8 audio tracks; AVI supports only one or two streams, so extra tracks are discarded during conversion.
  • AVI has a 4 GB file size limit; long recordings may hit this ceiling, though modern encoders use the OpenDML extension to work around it.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting MXF to AVI lose quality?
Yes. The video must be re-encoded from a broadcast codec to Xvid or MPEG-4, which is lossy. Choosing a high-quality setting (such as -q:v 2 in FFmpeg) keeps the loss minimal.
Can I convert MXF to AVI without re-encoding?
No. AVI does not support the codecs typically found in MXF files (XDCAM MPEG-2, DNxHD, AVC-Intra), so a full transcode is required.
Why does my converted AVI have no audio?
Professional MXF files often have multiple audio tracks and the converter may select an empty or timecode track by default. In FFmpeg, add -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:1 to target a different audio stream.
Should I use AVI to archive broadcast MXF footage?
No - AVI drops timecode, multi-track audio, and all broadcast metadata, and quality loss from re-encoding is permanent. Keep the original MXF or transcode to MOV/MXF with ProRes or DNxHD for archiving.
