Why convert MSO to DOCX?
Outlook generates oledata.mso when a message is composed in Rich Text or Word format and includes embedded OLE objects; the file is an ActiveMime wrapper around a compressed OLE2 blob containing rendering metadata. A .docx file is a ZIP package of XML files describing paragraphs, styles, images, and metadata - none of those structures exist inside .mso. Unlike winmail.dat, which can hide real attachments, oledata.mso holds only rendering data for embedded objects.

- No converter can produce a real
.docxfromoledata.mso- any tool claiming to do so will produce meaningless output. - The sender should change their Outlook message format (File > Options > Mail) from Rich Text to HTML or Plain Text to stop generating
.msoattachments. - The ActiveMime/OLE structure can carry VBA macros; treat unexpected
.msofiles from unknown senders with caution.
Frequently asked questions
I was expecting a Word document but only got oledata.mso. Where is my file?
.mso file. The sender most likely embedded the content as an OLE object instead of attaching a separate file - ask them to resend it as a normal .docx attachment. How is oledata.mso different from winmail.dat?
winmail.dat is a TNEF container that can hide real attachments; oledata.mso is an ActiveMime wrapper for embedded OLE object data and does not contain intentionally attached files.
