How to convert MKV to OGV
- Add your .MKV file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .OGV in a few seconds.
- Download your new .OGV file.
What to expect
- Re-encoding to Theora/VP8 is lossy; the result is only as good as the bitrate allows.
- MKV subtitles, chapters and secondary audio tracks are not carried into OGV.
- OGV plays in desktop browsers and VLC but is poorly supported on phones and in editors, where MP4 is preferred.
Frequently asked questions
How good does the OGV look compared with the MKV?
OGV uses royalty-free Theora or VP8 video, so a modern MKV is re-encoded into that codec - a lossy pass. Quality depends on the bitrate chosen and will not exceed the source.
Why convert MKV to OGV?
OGV is a fully royalty-free video format from Xiph.Org, useful for open-standard projects and for video that should play directly in a browser tab without proprietary codecs.
Where does an OGV file play?
VLC opens it on any desktop OS, and Firefox and Chrome can play it in the browser. Most phones and video editors reject Theora, so MP4 is the common fallback for those.
What is dropped in the conversion?
OGV carries one video and one audio stream, so MKV's extra audio tracks, text subtitles and chapters are not preserved.
