How to convert JPG to HDR
- Add your .JPG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .HDR in a few seconds.
- Download your new .HDR file.
What to expect
- Converting does not create true HDR; the JPG's limited 8-bit range is simply stored in RGBE form.
- The
.hdrwill not display in ordinary viewers or browsers, so it is a pipeline format, not a share-ready one. - To get a normal image back out, the HDR must be tone-mapped, not just renamed.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to HDR add high dynamic range?
No. The Radiance HDR format can store a very wide brightness range, but a JPG only contains 8-bit tones, so conversion just encodes those existing values as RGBE without recovering highlights or shadows the JPG never held.
Why convert a JPG to a Radiance `.hdr`?
Usually to feed an image into lighting, rendering, or 3D tools that expect the Radiance HDR format, for example as a background or environment plate.
What can open an HDR file?
Free tools such as GIMP, Blender, Krita, and the Photopea web editor read
.hdr. To share it as a normal picture you must tone-map it back to JPG or PNG; renaming will not work.Is any quality lost in the conversion?
The visible image stays the same since the source tones are preserved. HDR does not restore detail the JPG already discarded, so there is no quality gain either.
