What to expect

  • Wavelet re-encoding of an already-lossy JPEG preserves existing artifacts; lossless JP2 mode does not restore original quality.
  • Browser support is limited mainly to Safari, so JP2 is poorly suited to general sharing.
  • Metadata handling differs between the formats, so some JPEG Exif fields may not carry over.

Frequently asked questions

Is JP2 higher quality than the original JPEG?
The conversion cannot recover detail the JPEG already discarded, so the JP2 can at best preserve what is there; it does not improve the image. JPEG 2000 supports lossless encoding, but re-encoding a lossy source only freezes the existing artifacts rather than restoring the original.
Why convert a JPEG to JP2?
JPEG 2000 uses wavelet compression and supports both lossy and lossless modes plus higher bit depths, which some archival and imaging workflows prefer over baseline JPEG. It is chosen for those capabilities rather than for making an existing photo look better.
Where can I open a JP2 file?
On Windows, free tools like IrfanView (with its JPEG 2000 plugin) or XnView MP open it, and on macOS Preview opens it directly. Among browsers, only Safari displays JP2 natively, so it is not a good format for broad web use.
What about file size?
Depending on the compression mode chosen, a JP2 can be smaller than, similar to, or larger than the JPEG, with lossless mode producing the largest files. Either way the visible content matches the JPEG source.
