How to convert JPEG to HDR

  1. Add your .JPEG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .HDR in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .HDR file.

What to expect

  • The photo stays low-dynamic-range; HDR encoding does not recover highlights or shadows the JPEG never held.
  • JPEG compression artifacts carry over unchanged.
  • To view or share the result as an ordinary picture it must be tone-mapped back to a format like PNG or JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Will a JPEG converted to HDR actually contain extra brightness range?
No. Radiance HDR uses RGBE encoding to hold a wide brightness range, but a JPEG only carries 8-bit values, so the conversion cannot invent dynamic range that was never captured. It simply re-encodes the existing tones.
Why convert a JPEG to Radiance HDR?
HDR is used in lighting simulation and rendering workflows, so converting places a photo into a format those tools read. It is a container change; the underlying image data is unchanged.
Where does an HDR file open?
Free tools including GIMP, Blender, and Krita open Radiance HDR images, and Photopea handles them as well. Everyday photo viewers generally do not display it, and a plain rename to JPG will not make it viewable.
Is anything lost in the conversion?
The conversion keeps the JPEG's existing detail and its compression artifacts, adding nothing and removing no visible detail. The resulting file is larger than the JPEG because RGBE data is stored less compactly.
