What to expect

  • A lossy WebP result re-encodes the image, so expect a small loss of fine detail compared with the wavelet-compressed source; choose lossless WebP to keep every pixel.
  • WebP supports alpha transparency, so a transparent JP2 can keep its transparency.
  • JPEG 2000 features such as very high bit depths or multiple resolution levels are not represented in WebP and are flattened to a standard 8-bit-per-channel image.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JP2 to WebP lose image quality?
It depends on the mode. WEBP supports both lossy (VP8) and lossless (VP8L) encoding; a lossless WebP preserves every pixel, while lossy WebP re-encodes the picture and discards some detail to shrink the file. Because JP2 is wavelet-based and WebP is not, going through a lossy pass means the two compression schemes do not map perfectly, so fine detail can soften.
Why convert JPEG 2000 to WebP?
JP2 is poorly supported in browsers - historically only Safari displays it natively - whereas any modern web browser opens WEBP instantly. Converting trades a niche, hard-to-view format for one that is broadly compatible online.
Where will the resulting WebP file open?
WebP opens in every current web browser, in the Windows 11 Photos app, and in Preview on macOS. That is a much wider range of default viewers than JP2, which usually needs IrfanView with a plugin or XnView MP on Windows.
Will the WebP file be smaller than the JP2?
WebP is designed for small file sizes and often beats older formats, but JPEG 2000 is itself a strong compressor, so the size difference varies with the image and the chosen quality setting. A lossless conversion of a photographic image can be larger than a lossy one.
