Why convert IMG to DMG?
DMG is Apple's standard disk image format. Converting an .img to .dmg makes the file work natively with macOS's DiskImageMounter and Finder, and is needed when distributing the image to Mac users or using it in macOS installer workflows.
How to convert IMG to DMG
hdiutil (macOS) FREE
Run hdiutil convert input.img -format UDZO -o output.dmg in Terminal; use UDZO for a compressed read-only DMG or UDRW for a read/write image.
AnyToISO APP
Load the .img in AnyToISO, choose DMG as the output format, and click Convert; the result is a wrapped image suitable for file extraction but not for bootable Mac use.
AnyToISO for Mac APP
Open the .img in AnyToISO for Mac, select DMG output, and convert; for a native Apple volume hdiutil is more reliable.

hdiutilon macOS produces a true Apple DMG; Windows tools wrap the raw image and the result may not mount or boot correctly on a Mac. - The conversion preserves the filesystem data inside the image, but DMG-specific features (HFS+ extended attributes, code-signed volumes) are only present if the source
.imgalready had them. - Boot-sector data for non-Apple bootable images (Linux, Windows install discs) is carried over in the raw data, but macOS will not boot from such an image.
