- PNG is 8-bit or 16-bit; the floating-point HDR range of the
EXRis permanently reduced after export, so keep the original file. - Render passes (depth, normals, AOVs) stored in a multilayer
EXRdo not carry intoPNG- the file holds one RGBA image, usually the combined/beauty pass.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PNG look washed out or too dark?
EXR's HDR values do not map to PNG's 0-255 range without adjustment. Set the exposure before exporting - use the Exposure slider in Blender's Image Editor or Colors > Exposure in GIMP.
Is the PNG output lossless?
PNG compression is lossless so no artifacts are added, but the HDR dynamic range itself cannot be preserved - what is lost is brightness range, not sharpness or detail.
Can I recover the original EXR from the PNG?
No - the HDR values are permanently compressed during conversion. Always keep the source
EXR if you may need it again. Can I batch-convert multiple EXR files to PNG?
oiiotool supports batch conversion from the command line; Blender's scripting console can also loop over a folder of EXR files.Programs that convert EXR: Adobe Photoshop · 3D Coat · 3ds Max (3D Studio Max) · exrtools · Preview · Adobe Photoshop for Mac · darktable · FFmpeg
