Why convert DMS to IMG?
A .dms file (Amiga Disk Masher System) is a compressed snapshot of a Commodore Amiga floppy. Decompressing it produces a flat, sector-by-sector dump of the disk - the same thing a generic .img raw disk image is. The standard Amiga term for this output is .adf, but .adf and a raw .img of the same disk are interchangeable; renaming the extension changes nothing in the file.
How to convert DMS to IMG
xDMS OPEN-SOURCE
Run xdms u disk.dms - xDMS decompresses the Amiga disk image and writes disk.adf; rename the output to .img if your tool requires that specific extension.
WinUAE FREE
Load the .dms in WinUAE as a floppy drive, then use WinUAE's disk-image save option to export the decompressed raw image, renaming from .adf to .img as needed.

- A decompressed Amiga
.dmsis always exactly 880 KB - the full contents of a double-density 3.5" Amiga floppy including the bootblock; no data is lost. - Renaming
.adfto.imgchanges only the extension - the binary content is identical and tools accepting either extension will read the file correctly. - Verify the file is a genuine Amiga DMS image: it must begin with
DMS!(hex44 4D 53 21) at offset 0; the.dmsextension is also used by unrelated software.
