Convert DMS to ADF

QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert DMS to ADF?
Yes - DMS converts to ADF.

Run xdms u disk.dms in a terminal; xDMS writes disk.adf in the same folder. The resulting .adf is a complete lossless 880 KB Amiga disk image that every Amiga emulator mounts directly.

Why convert DMS to ADF?

A .dms file is a compressed snapshot of an 880 KB Commodore Amiga floppy disk created with the Disk Masher System in the early 1990s. An .adf (Amiga Disk File) is the same disk without compression - a plain raw image that Amiga emulators such as WinUAE, FS-UAE, and Amiga Forever read natively. Converting removes the proprietary DMS compression layer so the image works universally with emulators and ADF-aware tools.

How to convert DMS to ADF

xDMS OPEN-SOURCE

Run xdms u disk.dms in a terminal - xDMS decompresses the Amiga disk image and writes disk.adf in the same folder; available on Aminet and via Linux package managers.

WinUAE FREE

Load the .dms as a floppy drive in WinUAE - it decompresses the image internally - then use WinUAE's disk-image export option to save a permanent .adf file.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • DMS compression is lossless - the decompressed .adf is a bit-for-bit replica of the original disk, including the bootblock and any non-standard track layouts.
  • Verify the file is a genuine DMS image before converting: it must begin with the ASCII bytes DMS! at offset 0; if not, it is a different file sharing the .dms extension.
  • Many .dms files found online are commercial Amiga games - decompressing them does not resolve any copyright obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Can WinUAE use .dms files directly without converting to .adf?
Yes - WinUAE mounts .dms directly as a floppy image; convert to .adf only if you need a universally compatible raw image file.
Is anything lost when decompressing DMS to ADF?
No - DMS is lossless; the .adf is a complete byte-for-byte replica of the original disk.
How do I install xDMS?
On Linux, install via your package manager (sudo apt install xdms); on Windows, download a compiled build from Aminet (aminet.net).
My .dms file is refused by xDMS - why?
The file likely does not start with DMS! - the .dms extension is shared with unrelated software such as a MIDI editor and BYOND scripting tool.
