Why convert BAK to DWG?
When AutoCAD saves a drawing it renames the existing .dwg to .bak as a safety copy, so the two files are structurally identical. The most common reason to do this is recovery - if the current .dwg is corrupted or accidentally overwritten, the .bak holds the previous clean save.
How to convert BAK to DWG
AutoCAD APP
In AutoCAD go to Application Menu > Drawing Utilities > Recover, select the .bak file, and save the result under a new name; or copy and rename the .bak to .dwg and open it directly.
BricsCAD APP
Copy the .bak file, rename the copy to .dwg, and open it in BricsCAD, which reads DWG natively.
DraftSight APP
Copy the .bak file, rename the copy to .dwg, and open it in DraftSight.

- This only applies to AutoCAD
.bakfiles - hundreds of other programs also create.bakfiles, and renaming a non-AutoCAD.bakto.dwgwill produce a broken file. - The
.bakholds the state from the save before the last one; any work done after that save is not recoverable from it. - AutoCAD keeps only one
.bakper drawing - each new save overwrites the previous backup.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid AutoCAD license to open a recovered `.dwg`?
The renamed `.dwg` won't open - why?
.bak may not be from AutoCAD; confirm by checking whether an original .dwg with the same base name exists in the same folder.
