.spj is a project file associated with Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE), a panorama-stitching application. Unlike a plain image, an .spj file does not store raster pixel data directly - it holds references to the original source photos together with computed alignment data, projection settings (cylindrical, spherical, or Mercator), and crop parameters.
ICE Panorama allows users to create panorama photos based on smaller overlapping photos. A project created with ICE Panorama can be exported to more popular image formats that support high resolutions, such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or PSD. ICE Panorama is free software, developed by Microsoft Research.
Because .spj only references the source photos and does not embed them, moving or deleting those files breaks the project. The stitched panorama must be exported separately before sharing or archiving.
The format is proprietary and undocumented; only ICE opens .spj files natively. Microsoft ICE was discontinued after its final release in 2015. Users who need an active alternative typically turn to Hugin (free, cross-platform) or PTGui, both of which use their own project formats.

The practical risk is data loss/obsolescence: because Microsoft discontinued ICE and removed the download, an .spj may become unopenable if you no longer have ICE installed, and the project breaks if the referenced source photos are moved or deleted. Keep the original photos and, if ICE is still installed, export the panorama to JPEG/TIFF now so the result isn't trapped in a dead format.
