.xltxand.xlsxshare the same OOXML structure, so rows, formulas, cell styles, named ranges, and charts carry over intact..xltxfiles cannot store VBA macros - macro-enabled templates use.xltm- so no macro content is lost during this conversion.- LibreOffice and OpenOffice may render certain advanced Excel features such as some conditional formats or chart types slightly differently; check the result if your template is complex.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting `.xltx` to `.xlsx` lossless?
Yes, in almost all cases. The two formats share the same internal OOXML structure; only the content-type marker that flags the file as a template is changed.
Why did opening the `.xltx` create a new file instead of opening it directly?
That is by design - a template is a starting point. The app builds a new workbook from it and leaves the original untouched; saving that new workbook as
.xlsx is exactly the conversion you want.Do I need Microsoft Excel to convert?
No. LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and Google Sheets all open
.xltx files and save or download as .xlsx for free. Will macros be lost?
There are no macros to lose.
.xltx files cannot contain VBA macros; if a template stores macros, it uses the .xltm format instead.Programs that convert XLTX: Microsoft Excel · PlanMaker · Microsoft Excel for Mac · Microsoft Excel for iOS · Microsoft Office Mobile for Android · Apache OpenOffice Calc (OpenOffice.org Calc) · Microsoft Office Mobile for Windows Phone
