How to convert WIM to ZIP
- Add your .WIM file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .ZIP in a few seconds.
- Download your new .ZIP file.
What to expect
- WIM to ZIP is always a two-step process - no tool does it in one pass: you must extract the WIM contents first, then create the ZIP.
- The resulting ZIP will almost always be larger than the source WIM because WIM uses stronger LZX compression and single-instance storage (deduplication) that ZIP does not replicate.
- ZIP does not preserve NTFS permissions, hard links, or reparse points stored in a WIM - files arrive with default permissions, which is fine for sharing but not for Windows deployment.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a one-click WIM to ZIP converter?
Our converter above handles it in one step. With desktop tools, the process is always two steps: extract the WIM, then compress the output to ZIP.
Why is the ZIP bigger than the WIM?
WIM uses LZX compression (stronger than ZIP's DEFLATE) and stores duplicate files only once across image indexes; a ZIP recompresses each file separately, so the total size grows.
I only need one file from install.wim - do I have to ZIP everything?
No - open the
.wim in 7-Zip, browse to the file, and extract just that one item; creating a full ZIP is only worth it if you need to share or archive all the contents. Can I use the ZIP with DISM or Windows Setup?
No - DISM and Windows Setup require a
.wim or .esd image; a ZIP of the extracted files cannot be used for Windows deployment.
