Why convert VHDX to VHD?

VHDX is Microsoft's modern virtual hard disk container, introduced with Windows 8 and Server 2012, supporting disks up to 64 TB with corruption-resistant logging. .VHD is the older format, capped at 2 TB, and is still required by certain platforms - Azure managed disk uploads and some older hypervisors that do not accept VHDX.

How to convert VHDX to VHD

Convert-VHD (PowerShell) FREE

Run Convert-VHD -Path disk.vhdx -DestinationPath disk.vhd in an elevated PowerShell window; add -VHDType Fixed for Azure. Requires the Hyper-V feature on Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Server.

Hyper-V Manager FREE

In Hyper-V Manager, click Edit Disk on the .vhdx, choose Convert, select VHD as the format, and set the output path.
