Do the files inside change when converting from `.tar` to `.tar.gz`?
No. Gzip compresses the .tar as a whole stream without touching the individual files, names, or directory structure inside.
Are Linux file permissions preserved?
Yes. Permissions, symlinks, and timestamps are stored in the .tar headers, which gzip does not modify - this is why .tar.gz is preferred over .zip on Unix systems.
Why did `gzip` delete my original `.tar`?
