How to convert SKP to OBJ
- Add your .SKP file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .OBJ in a few seconds.
- Download your new .OBJ file.
What to expect
- SketchUp Free (web tier) cannot export OBJ - this requires a paid SketchUp plan (Go, Pro, or Studio).
- SketchUp Pro writes two output files:
.objand.mtl. Keep them in the same folder, or materials will not load in the receiving app; texture images go into a named subfolder next to the.obj. - Axis orientation differs between apps - use the Y/Z-swap option in SketchUp Pro's export dialog, or adjust Forward/Up axes in your importer, to avoid a sideways or upside-down result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert SKP to OBJ without SketchUp Pro?
Yes - use our free converter above, or export STL from SketchUp Free and re-convert it in Blender. Either way, the original SKP material data is not carried over.
Why does the imported OBJ look sideways or upside-down?
SketchUp uses Z-up orientation while many apps default to Y-up. Use the axis-swap option in SketchUp Pro's export dialog or adjust the import axes in your target application.
Are textures included in the OBJ export?
Yes, when exporting from SketchUp Pro: texture images are placed in a subfolder next to the
.obj, and the .mtl file references them by relative path, so include that folder whenever you move or share the files. Is DAE a better choice than OBJ for Blender?
DAE (Collada) is another format SketchUp Pro exports and Blender imports; it can preserve material assignments more cleanly than OBJ, so it is worth testing both for your specific model.
