Why convert REC to MP4?
MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) plays on phones, tablets, smart TVs, and video editors without plugins, while .rec files work only on Topfield hardware or in VLC, and even then can fail due to the proprietary header.
How to convert REC to MP4
HandBrake FREE
Open HandBrake, click Open Source and select the .rec or a de-headered .mpg/.ts, choose an MP4 preset, set the output filename, and click Start Encode.
ffmpeg OPEN-SOURCE
Run ffmpeg -i input.rec -c copy output.mp4 for a direct remux; if the header causes errors, de-header first with rec2mpg or tfrec2ts, then re-encode with ffmpeg -i output.ts -c:v libx264 -c:a aac out.mp4.
VLC media player FREE
If VLC plays the .rec, go to Media > Convert/Save, add the file, choose an H.264+MP4 profile, set the output filename, and click Start.
