How to convert RAS to JPG
- Add your .RAS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .JPG in a few seconds.
- Download your new .JPG file.
What to expect
- JPEG compression is lossy, so the output is an approximation of the RAS pixels and re-saving repeatedly degrades it further.
- RAS has no transparency, so nothing is lost there, but the result is a single flat RGB image with no alpha channel.
- Expect a much smaller file for photographic content; flat-color or line art may show blocky edge artifacts.
Frequently asked questions
Will the image look the same after converting RAS to JPG?
Visually it will look nearly identical at normal viewing, but JPG uses lossy DCT compression, so fine detail and sharp edges are approximated rather than preserved exactly. A RAS file stores pixels either uncompressed or with lossless RLE, so this conversion always throws away some data that cannot be recovered.
Why convert RAS to JPG at all?
RAS is an obsolete Sun Raster format that few modern programs open, while JPG opens natively on every operating system and browser. Converting also shrinks photographic images dramatically because of JPG's compression.
Where will the resulting JPG open?
Anywhere - Windows Photos, macOS Preview, any web browser, phones, and every image editor read JPEG without extra software. That universal support is the main reason to pick JPG over RAS.
What is lost going from RAS to JPG?
The lossless pixel fidelity of RAS is gone, and any alpha transparency cannot carry over because JPEG has no transparency channel. For photos the visible loss is small; for sharp graphics or text, JPG artifacts may appear around edges.
