How to convert PNG to JPX

  1. Add your .PNG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .JPX in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .JPX file.

What to expect

  • JPX can be encoded losslessly (an exact copy of the PNG pixels) or lossy (smaller file, some detail re-encoded away) - the mode chosen determines fidelity.
  • Few programs open JPX: Safari among browsers, and dedicated tools like IrfanView with a plugin on the desktop; expect compatibility problems compared with PNG.
  • PNG metadata chunks (text, colour profile, etc.) do not map directly into the JPX container and may not survive the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is quality lost converting PNG to JPX?
It depends on the encoder settings. JPX (JPEG 2000 Part 2) supports both lossless and lossy wavelet compression, so a lossless setting preserves the PNG exactly, while a lossy setting trades some fidelity for a smaller file.
Why convert a PNG to JPX?
JPX is used when you need JPEG 2000's extended features, such as its wavelet compression, extra colour spaces, or multiple layers and compositing. A plain PNG has none of these, so converting adds them for workflows that require the JPEG 2000 Part 2 container.
Where can I open the resulting JPX file?
Support is limited: among browsers only Safari displays JPEG 2000, and on Windows you generally need a dedicated viewer such as IrfanView with its JPEG 2000 plugin. If broad compatibility matters, PNG opens everywhere and JPX does not.
Does the PNG's transparency carry over to JPX?
JPEG 2000 Part 2 can store an alpha channel, so transparency can be preserved, but whether a given viewer honours it varies. Because JPX playback support is narrow, transparency may not render as expected outside JPEG 2000-aware software.
