What to expect

  • Always choose 16-bit when exporting - an 8-bit TIFF loses most of the tonal advantage a raw file has over JPEG.
  • A NEF uses a TIFF-based container internally but cannot simply be renamed to .tif; a raw developer must demosaic the sensor data first.
  • A 16-bit TIFF from a 24 MP NEF is typically 100-150 MB; LZW or ZIP compression in the export dialog can halve that without any quality loss.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert NEF to TIF without losing quality?
Yes - export as 16-bit TIF with LZW or ZIP compression, which is fully lossless and preserves the full tonal range developed from the raw sensor data.
What is the difference between .tif and .tiff?
Nothing - .tif and .tiff are the same Tagged Image File Format; both extensions are interchangeable and accepted by all software.
Should I keep the original NEF after converting?
Yes - the TIFF is a processed result and cannot be converted back to raw data, so always keep the NEF as your editing master.
Is TIFF better than JPEG for NEF conversions?
For editing and archiving, yes - TIFF is lossless and holds 16-bit depth, whereas JPEG discards data permanently on every save.
