Why convert FNMM to JSON?
People want the raw .json to inspect a mod's chart, notes, and settings, or to reuse them in another engine or editor. The .fnmm bundles those JSON files together with audio and images, so "converting" really means extracting the JSON already inside. No re-encoding happens - you copy the JSON out unchanged.
How to convert FNMM to JSON
7-Zip (extract the JSON) EASIEST
Right-click the .fnmm and choose 7-Zip > Open archive. If it opens, drag the .json chart and metadata files out. If it refuses, copy the file and rename the copy to .zip first.
A text editor (peek inside)
Once extracted, open the .json in VS Code or Notepad to read or edit the chart data; use Format Document in VS Code to make it readable.
The Archive Utility / unzip (macOS, Linux)
On macOS or Linux, run unzip mod.fnmm -d modfiles (rename to .zip first if the tool insists) to extract the JSON and assets into a folder.
