Why convert FLV to GIF?
Animated GIFs embed in web pages, messaging apps, and documents without a video player, making them useful for short clips from old .flv files. The .flv format is a standard video container, so any tool that reads video can produce a GIF from it. File size is the main constraint: GIF stores every frame as a full indexed image, so even short clips can be several megabytes.
How to convert FLV to GIF
FFmpeg OPEN-SOURCE
Run FFmpeg with the filter -vf fps=10,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos to convert a short .flv clip to an animated .gif; add a two-pass palette step using palettegen and paletteuse filters for significantly better color quality.
VLC FREE
Go to Media > Convert/Save, add the .flv, open profile settings, set the video codec to GIF, specify a .gif output path, and click Start - quality is lower than FFmpeg's palette method.

- GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so video with varied colors will show banding - FFmpeg's two-pass palette method reduces this significantly.
- File size grows rapidly: a 5-second clip at 480 px wide and 10 fps can easily be 3-8 MB; keep clips short and resolution low.
- GIF has no audio channel - the audio track in the
