Convert EX4 to EXE

Can you convert EX4 to EXE?
QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert EX4 to EXE?
No - not a direct conversion.

There is no EX4-to-EXE converter. To run the Expert Advisor or indicator, use MetaTrader 4 - the only environment that executes .ex4 files. A standalone executable would require a developer to rewrite the trading logic from scratch in a language that compiles to Windows PE format.

Why convert EX4 to EXE?

EX4 contains compiled MQL4 bytecode - the MetaTrader 4 terminal acts as a virtual machine for it. A Windows .exe uses the PE format and runs directly under the Windows kernel with Win32 API access. Bridging that gap would require reimplementing all MQL4 API calls as Windows equivalents and supplying the entire MT4 runtime separately, and no tool does this. MetaQuotes added obfuscation to the EX4 format in MT4 build 600 (2014), making even partial decompilation unreliable.

How to convert EX4 to EXE

MetaTrader 4 FREE

Copy the .ex4 file into the MQL4\Experts, MQL4\Indicators, or MQL4\Scripts folder inside MT4's data directory, then attach it from the Navigator panel. MetaTrader 4 is free from MetaQuotes or your broker.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • .ex4 files contain MQL4 bytecode designed for the MT4 terminal's runtime - they have no relationship to the Windows PE format that .exe files use.
  • EX4 files since MT4 build 600 (2014) are obfuscated against decompilation, making code extraction and recompilation as a Windows .exe impossible.
  • A standalone trading application with the same logic would require rewriting the MQL4 source in C or another language - a software development project, not a file conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract code from an EX4 and recompile it as an EXE?
No. EX4 files since 2014 are obfuscated, and even if partial extraction were possible, the result would be MQL4 bytecode - not a language that compiles to a Windows .exe.
Why does EX4 look like an executable if it is not a real EXE?
EX4 is executable only in the sense that MT4 runs it - it has no relationship to the Windows PE format and requires the MT4 terminal to be present and running.
Is MetaTrader 4 free?
Yes - MetaTrader 4 is available free from MetaQuotes or your broker; Mac and Linux users can use a broker's Wine-based bundle or a Windows VPS.
