Why convert ENC to TXT?
The .enc extension is a generic label for files encrypted or encoded by a specific application. The bytes inside are deliberately scrambled and cannot be read as text - or converted to any format - without the decryption key. No conversion tool can produce readable content from ciphertext because that is what encryption is designed to prevent.
How to convert ENC to TXT
openssl enc FREE
Run openssl enc -d with the matching cipher and password (e.g., openssl enc -d -aes-256-cbc -in file.enc -out file.txt); the result is plain text only if the original encrypted file was plain text.
About these formats
An ENC file is almost always an ENCrypted or ENCoded file - its contents are scrambled and there is no single format. You can only open it with the specific application and key or password…
Open .ENC details →A TXT file is plain, unformatted text - the simplest document format on any computer. Double-click it: Windows opens it in Notepad, macOS in TextEdit, Linux in gedit. Nothing to install. If…

- Renaming
.encto.txtchanges only the extension, not the bytes; a text editor will display unreadable characters. - The
.encextension is shared by many unrelated programs with incompatible encryption schemes - there is no universal decryption approach. - Do not upload sensitive encrypted files to online ENC-to-TXT converters; without your key they cannot decrypt anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just rename `file.enc` to `file.txt`?
I encrypted a file with OpenSSL and want the text back - what do I do?
openssl enc -d with the same cipher, key, and password used to encrypt; you must know those values as the file cannot be recovered without them.
