Why convert EMZ to VSD?
EMZ is a GZIP-compressed EMF (Windows Enhanced Metafile) that stores GDI drawing commands - a flat picture with no shape IDs, connector endpoints, or data fields. A VSD file is a binary OLE Compound File in which each shape carries an ID, geometry, type, and connected ports. When Visio or Office exports content as EMZ, the diagram structure is permanently discarded and cannot be recovered from the rendered image.
How to convert EMZ to VSD
Microsoft Visio APP
If the original .vsd or .vsdx file is available, open it in Microsoft Visio directly. If not, insert the .emz as a reference picture via Insert > Pictures and manually redraw the diagram on top of it.
LibreOffice Draw FREE
Open the .emz in LibreOffice Draw and export it as SVG or PNG to use as a visual reference while manually recreating the diagram in Visio.

- EMZ is often embedded as an export artifact inside a
.docxor.pptxfile - the original Visio source may still exist alongside it. - Visio can insert an EMZ as a static picture via Insert > Pictures, but the result is a non-editable image on the page, not a diagram.
- If the original
.vsdno longer exists, the only option is to manually recreate the diagram in Visio using the EMZ image as a visual reference.
