Why convert DWL to PDF?
A .dwl file records who has a .dwg open, on which computer, and when - it is a plain-text signaling file with no geometry, pages, or visual content. PDF generation requires a source with drawable content, which a .dwl does not provide. AutoCAD normally deletes the .dwl automatically on close; it only becomes visible after a crash or network failure.

About these formats

- The lock file
.dwl(and companion.dwl2) can be safely deleted after confirming the drawing is not open - this releases any stale lock left by a crash. - Opening a
.dwlin Notepad shows its entire contents: a user name, a computer name, and a timestamp - no drawing data. - AutoCAD's built-in DWG to PDF.pc3 driver is the standard path for producing accurate PDFs from
.dwgfiles.
Frequently asked questions
I only have the `.dwl` file - is the drawing gone?
.dwl is not the drawing. Look for the .dwg with the same base name in the same folder, in project backups, or at the network path the drawing was originally opened from. Why is the `.dwg` showing as read-only when a `.dwl` exists?
.dwl from a crash signals that the file is in use. Delete the .dwl and .dwl2 after confirming no one has the file open, then reopen the .dwg.
