Convert APK to AAB

Can you convert APK to AAB?
QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert APK to AAB?
No - not a direct conversion.

No tool converts APK to AAB because the AAB requires the original source project, resource tree, and build configuration - none of which are present in the compiled APK. If you are the developer, rebuild the AAB from source in Android Studio.

Why convert APK to AAB?

An AAB (Android App Bundle) is the publishing format uploaded to Google Play, from which Google's servers generate optimised APKs per device. An APK is the finished compiled output. Reconstructing an AAB from an APK would require recovering source-level structure that was discarded during compilation.

How to convert APK to AAB

Android Studio FREE

If you have the original source project, build a new AAB via Build > Generate Signed Bundle/APK, then choose Android App Bundle. Google Play has required AAB for new apps since August 2021.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • Sites claiming to convert APK to AAB either repackage the APK unchanged or return an invalid file - neither is a real AAB.
  • If the source project is lost, the AAB cannot be recovered from the APK; you would need to rebuild from scratch.
  • bundletool converts AAB to APK sets, not the other way around - it has no APK-to-AAB command.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google Play require AAB instead of APK?
AAB lets Google build device-specific APKs containing only the resources and libraries a particular device needs, reducing download size.
Can bundletool convert APK to AAB?
No. bundletool converts AAB to APK sets; it has no APK-to-AAB command.
I downloaded an APK from a mirror site - can I reupload it to Google Play as an AAB?
No. Google Play requires an AAB signed with the developer's upload key and built from a Gradle project; a repackaged APK cannot satisfy those requirements.
