How to convert 3DS to IGS
- Add your .3DS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .IGS in a few seconds.
- Download your new .IGS file.
What to expect
- The faceted 3DS mesh is carried into IGS as-is; no smooth surface reconstruction occurs.
- Materials, textures, and scene lighting do not survive the conversion.
- The output is neutral exchange geometry, not a parametric CAD solid.
Frequently asked questions
Does 3DS to IGS produce clean CAD surfaces?
No. IGS (IGES) supports precise surfaces, but the source 3DS is a triangle mesh, so the output stays faceted. The converter does not turn triangles back into smooth NURBS geometry.
Why convert a 3DS file to IGS?
IGS is the same neutral IGES CAD format under the common short extension, used to share geometry between different CAD programs. Converting makes an old 3D Studio mesh usable in CAD tooling.
Where does an IGS file open?
IGS opens in FreeCAD, CAD Assistant, and the vast majority of CAD applications. The format is designed specifically for cross-program geometry exchange.
What gets discarded in the conversion?
3DS materials, textures, lights, and cameras are not kept, and the mesh remains faceted rather than becoming an editable solid. You get geometry only.
