.ptx is the Pro Tools Session File introduced by Avid Technology in 2011 with Pro Tools 10, replacing the older .ptf format used by Pro Tools 7-9. A .ptx file is a binary project file - it does not contain audio samples. Instead, it stores the complete session blueprint: track layout, edit playlists, mixer routing, automation data, and plug-in settings. The actual audio is kept separately in a companion Audio Files folder alongside the session, typically as .wav or .aif files.
When you open a .ptx session, Pro Tools reads it and locates the referenced audio media. Moving or renaming the session folder without preserving the Audio Files subfolder intact will cause missing-media errors. The format is proprietary and partly obfuscated; Avid has not published an official binary specification. The open-source ptformat library has reverse-engineered the layout, enabling limited import into other DAWs such as Ardour.
.ptx files are supported on both Windows and macOS across all current Pro Tools tiers - Intro, Artist, Studio, and Ultimate. The session file stores metadata such as the project sample rate (44.1, 48, 96, or 192 kHz) and bit depth; the audio samples themselves reside only in the linked external files. Newer .ptx sessions created in a later Pro Tools version generally cannot be opened in older versions of the software.

РИСК: LOWA .ptx session file is passive project data (references and settings) with no executable code, so it is safe to open in Pro Tools. The practical 'risk' is workflow, not security: opening a .ptx without its Audio Files folder yields a session with missing media, and plug-ins referenced by the session must be installed or tracks load inactive. Keep the whole session folder together when sharing or archiving.
