A .pod file is a documentation file for the Perl programming language. POD files use a special markup syntax for better readability and functionality. The syntax is very basic and highly standardized - there is no option to change font size or color, add images, or tables. This allows .pod files to be easily converted to other formats such as HTML, TeX, Markdown, and XML. .pod files can be read interactively with the perldoc tool.
*Plain Old Documentation* is a very convenient markup language suitable for creating clear and succinct software documentation files. Most documentation for Perl modules and distributions published on CPAN is written in this format.
Besides appearing as standalone .pod files, POD documentation can be embedded directly inside .pl and .pm source files between =pod and =cut marker lines - the Perl interpreter simply ignores those sections during compilation. POD defines three paragraph types: command paragraphs beginning with = (such as =head1, =over, =item, =back, =cut), verbatim paragraphs (indented with whitespace), and ordinary text paragraphs with inline formatting codes like B<>, I<>, C<>, and L<>. Character encoding is declared with =encoding utf-8.
POD documents can be easily converted into system help manuals (man pages) using pod2man, into HTML with pod2html, or into plain text with pod2text.

Two cautions: (1) if a .pod is actually a Terminal Reality game archive it's binary - don't try to 'fix' it as text; open it with a game-specific extractor. (2) Embedded POD lives inside .pl/.pm Perl source - the documentation is inert, but the surrounding Perl code is a program; only run scripts you trust.
