Files with the .note extension contain notes created by Notability, a note-taking application developed by Ginger Labs, Inc. for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. Files with the .note extension can include text, markers, audio data, handwriting, as well as drawings, graphics, and photos.
The dedicated software allows for placing practically any content within .note files, which eases the creation of quick notes. Under the hood, each .note file is packaged as a ZIP archive - renaming it to .zip lets you browse its internal parts, which include a metadata plist, vector handwriting strokes, typed text, embedded images, and audio recordings. Files with the .note extension have a proprietary format, so they can only be fully opened by the Notability application itself. Besides handling .note files, Notability also reads formats such as PDF and RTF, so content from these formats can be easily imported into notes. For wider compatibility, notes are best exported to PDF.
