The .lng file extension is used for generic language files that add language and locale support to applications. A .lng file contains UI string identifiers mapped to their translated text, most commonly arranged in an INI-style key=value layout with named sections such as [General] or [Language]. Most .lng files carry translations for a single language; a program ships one .lng per supported locale.
.lng files are used for localizing software interface data, dialogs, menus, and documentation labels. Available language options are typically presented during program installation, though language settings can usually be changed later from the program's settings menu.
A .lng file is always tied to the specific software it belongs to and should not be opened manually. Text-based variants can be read in any standard text editor, however, not all .lng files use plain text. Some programs store .lng data in a proprietary binary format, in which case the file contents will not be readable as plain text.
There is no universal specification - .lng is a per-application convention with no single defined format. Modern applications increasingly replace custom .lng files with established standards such as gettext .po files, Java .properties files, or XML .resx resources.

Two practical cautions: it only works inside its own application, so editing the wrong copy or breaking the key= names can leave that program showing blank or wrong labels (keep a backup). Because the format is undefined, a file named .lng could occasionally be something else entirely - inspect it as text first. The file cannot execute on its own.
