How to convert XLS to XLT
- Add your .XLS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .XLT in a few seconds.
- Download your new .XLT file.
What to expect
- XLS and XLT use the same BIFF8 binary format - all formulas, charts, conditional formatting, and named ranges carry over unchanged.
- VBA macros embedded in the XLS are preserved in the XLT; distributing a macro template carries the same security considerations as a macro-enabled workbook.
- XLT inherits XLS row and column limits (65,536 rows, 256 columns per sheet); if large data sets will later fill the template, use
.xltxor.xltminstead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between XLS and XLT?
The binary format is identical - the difference is behavioral: double-clicking an
.xlt file creates a new unnamed workbook based on its contents rather than opening the template itself for editing. Will formulas and formatting survive the conversion?
Yes. Because XLS and XLT share the same BIFF8 format, no data transformation occurs and everything carries over intact.
Should I use XLT or XLTX?
Use
.xltx (or .xltm for macros) unless you need compatibility with Excel 2003 or older - it is the current standard, has no legacy row/column limits, and is better supported by third-party tools. How do I edit the template itself rather than create a new file from it?
Right-click the
.xlt file and choose Open, or in Excel go to File > Open and select the file - double-clicking creates a new workbook from the template instead.Programs that convert XLS: Microsoft Excel · PlanMaker · Microsoft Excel for Mac · NeoOffice · Excel Mobile · LibreOffice Calc · Apache OpenOffice Calc (OpenOffice.org Calc)
