How to convert PCX to PNG
- Add your .PCX file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .PNG in a few seconds.
- Download your new .PNG file.
What to expect
- PCX has no alpha channel, so the resulting PNG will have no transparency - just a solid background.
- Color depth is preserved: an 8-bit palette PCX becomes an 8-bit palette PNG; a 24-bit truecolor PCX becomes a 24-bit PNG.
- PNG's DEFLATE compression is often more efficient than PCX's simple RLE, so the converted file may be smaller.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting PCX to PNG lose any image data?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel value in the
.pcx is preserved exactly in the .png output. Why won't Windows Photos open my PCX file?
Windows Photos does not support PCX. Convert it to
.png first using IrfanView, GIMP, or the free converter above, and it will open in any application. Can I convert many PCX files at once?
Yes - IrfanView's File > Batch Conversion, XnView MP's batch converter, and ImageMagick's command line all process whole folders in one pass.
Will the PNG file be larger or smaller than the PCX?
It depends on the image content. PNG is usually smaller for photographic images; for very simple two-color bitmaps the sizes are roughly comparable.
