Why convert NC to CSV?
CSV is the lowest-common-denominator format for data exchange; spreadsheets, databases, and most analysis tools read it without a special driver. Exporting a netCDF variable slice to CSV is the standard way to share a data subset with colleagues who lack netCDF tooling or to load it into Excel, R, or a database.
How to convert NC to CSV
Python (xarray + netCDF4) FREE
Install with pip install xarray netCDF4, open your .nc file with xarray.open_dataset(), select the variable and slice with .sel(), then call .to_dataframe().to_csv('output.csv').
Panoply FREE
Open the .nc file in Panoply, double-click a variable to load a 2D slice, then use File > Export Data as Text to save it as a CSV or tab-separated file.
CDO (Climate Data Operators) OPEN-SOURCE
Run cdo outputtab, date, lon, lat, value infile.nc output.csv to export a variable as a flat tabular text file.
NCO (NetCDF Operators) OPEN-SOURCE
Run ncks -H -v variable_name yourfile.nc > output.csv to extract a named variable in text form; clean the header line manually afterward.
About these formats
An .nc file is a netCDF (Network Common Data Form) file - a binary format for multidimensional scientific data such as climate, weather, and ocean datasets from NOAA, NASA, and Copernicus.…
Open .NC details →A CSV file stores tabular data as plain text - one row per line, values separated by commas (or semicolons in European locales). Any spreadsheet opens it: Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice…
Open .CSV details →Quality & what to watch
- You export a slice, not the whole file - always select the variable and dimension range you need before exporting, or the output will be too large to be useful.
- Variable names are defined inside the
.ncfile; runncdump -h yourfile.ncorprint(ds)in xarray to list them before attempting any export. - netCDF-4 files are HDF5 internally; classic netCDF files start with
CDFin the header - both formats are readable by all tools listed above.

How do I find the variable names inside a netCDF file?
ncdump -h yourfile.nc from the command line, or open the file in Panoply and read the variable list in the left panel.
