Why convert MOTR to MOV?
People turn a .motr into .mov when they need a self-contained, playable video of the transition to preview it, post it, or drop it into an editor that cannot read Motion templates. QuickTime .mov is a widely supported container, whereas the .motr template is only useful inside the Motion and Final Cut ecosystem.
How to convert MOTR to MOV
Apple Motion APP
Open the .motr, then choose File > Share > Export Movie and pick a QuickTime codec to render a .mov. Enabling Motion Blur or Frame Blending in the Render pane bakes those effects in.
Apple Final Cut Pro APP
Apply the transition between two clips in Final Cut, then use File > Share > Master File to export the timeline as a .mov.
Apple Motion (Save Preview Movie) EASIEST
When saving the transition template, tick Save Preview Movie so Motion writes an accompanying .mov preview alongside the .motr.

- The
.movis a flat render - once exported you can no longer edit the transition's layers or parameters. - Because a transition animates between two clips, you must supply placeholder source clips or the render will show empty drop zones.
- Motion does not include actual media in the template, so any missing referenced assets must be relinked before exporting.
