Why convert MODFEM to NEU?
The .modfem database is binary and tied to a Femap release, so it is not ideal for archiving or sharing. The Femap neutral .neu file is a platform-independent ASCII format that Femap recommends for long-term storage and for exchanging models with other Femap versions and third-party tools.
How to convert MODFEM to NEU
Simcenter Femap - Export Femap Neutral
Open the .modfem and run File > Export > Femap Neutral. Select the model portions to include; Femap writes a portable ASCII .neu file.
Export to an older Femap version
In the neutral export dialog pick an earlier version number so the .neu can be read by an older Femap (a current-version .neu cannot be opened by much older builds).
About these formats
A .modfem file is the native model file saved by Femap (now Simcenter Femap), the finite element analysis pre- and post-processor from Siemens. It stores a complete FE model in one binary…

- A
.neuwritten by a newer Femap cannot be read by a much older version unless you export to that older version explicitly. - You choose which portions of the model are written, so an incomplete selection can leave out loads, groups or output.
- As ASCII,
.neufiles are larger than the binary.modfemand slower to read back for very large models.
