Convert LUA to TXT

Can you convert LUA to TXT?
QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert LUA to TXT?
No - not a direct conversion.

.lua files store UTF-8 or ASCII characters - the same data as a .txt file. Open the .lua file directly in any text editor, or rename it to .txt; the bytes inside are unchanged either way. The exception is compiled Lua bytecode (.luac) saved with a .lua extension, which is binary and will not become readable by renaming.

Why convert LUA to TXT?

The only difference between .lua and .txt is the file extension, which controls syntax highlighting in editors. The underlying data is the same plain text in both cases. The text/x-lua MIME type does not describe a different encoding or structure from .txt - it only signals to editors that Lua syntax highlighting should be applied.

How to convert LUA to TXT

Visual Studio Code FREE

Open the .lua file directly in Visual Studio Code, Notepad++, or Windows Notepad - no conversion needed. To save as .txt, use File > Save As and change the extension.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • Renaming .lua to .txt does not alter the file contents in any way; the bytes are identical before and after.
  • If the file starts with the bytes 1B 4C 75 61 (ESC + 'Lua'), it is compiled bytecode - renaming to .txt will show garbled output in any editor.
  • No converter tool adds value here; a file rename accomplishes exactly the same result as any 'LUA to TXT' converter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a converter to open a .lua file as text?
No. Any text editor opens a .lua file directly - it is already plain text.
Why does my editor show .lua files differently from .txt files?
It applies Lua syntax highlighting based on the extension. Switch the language mode to 'Plain Text' to remove highlighting - the text content is identical.
My .lua file shows garbled characters when opened - is it corrupted?
It is probably compiled Lua bytecode saved with a .lua extension. Check if the first four bytes are 1B 4C 75 61; if so, you need the original source file - bytecode cannot be converted back to readable Lua.
