Why convert GGUF to BIN?
Some people assume an older .bin is needed for a legacy tool, but .bin GGML was deprecated in favor of GGUF, which fixed metadata and compatibility problems. Since current llama.cpp builds dropped GGML loading entirely, going backward would target software that no longer exists.
How to convert GGUF to BIN
Use the GGUF file directly FREE
Load the .gguf in current llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio or KoboldCpp; they all read GGUF natively, so no .bin is needed.
Update the tool that wanted .bin OPEN-SOURCE
Rebuild or upgrade the old runtime to a GGUF-capable version rather than downgrading the model.
Re-quantize from the original weights OPEN-SOURCE
If you truly need a specific old artifact, go back to the source safetensors/PyTorch weights and re-quantize, rather than converting the GGUF.
About these formats
A .gguf file is a GGML Universal Format File, the binary container used by llama.cpp and related tools to store a large language model as a single file. It holds the model weights,…

- Legacy GGML
.binsupport was removed from llama.cpp, so even if you produced one it would not load in current builds. - GGUF stores richer metadata (tokenizer, architecture, hyperparameters) that the old
.binformat cannot hold, so a downgrade would lose information. - A
.binextension is generic; many.binfiles are not GGML at all, which is another reason the mapping is meaningless.
