- Convert it to .MKV in a few seconds.
- Download your new .MKV file.
What to expect
- Some Dahua firmware versions export scrambled
DAVfiles; FFmpeg, VLC, and online converters cannot open these - use Dahua SmartPlayer (or your OEM brand's equivalent player) to export to MP4 first. - If the footage may be used as legal evidence, keep the original
.davfile untouched - Dahua embeds a tamper-detection watermark that only SmartPlayer can verify, which theMKVcopy does not carry. - A
DAVfile recorded without a microphone produces anMKVwith no audio track - that is expected, not a conversion error.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting DAV to MKV lose video quality?
Not with stream copy. FFmpeg's
ffmpeg -i file.dav -c copy out.mkv and our converter both remux without re-encoding, preserving quality exactly. VLC and HandBrake re-encode, which does reduce quality slightly. Can I convert DAV files from Amcrest, Lorex, or Q-See recorders?
Yes - these are Dahua OEM brands that use the same internal DHAV stream format, so any method that works for Dahua works for them too, as long as the export is not scrambled.
Why does FFmpeg fail to open my DAV file?
The most common cause is a scrambled export - open the file in Dahua SmartPlayer; if it plays there, export to MP4 from SmartPlayer and convert from that. A corrupted USB export can also cause failures; in that case, re-export from the recorder.
Should I convert to MKV or MP4?
Both are equally lossless with stream copy. Choose MP4 for sharing or playback on TVs and phones; choose MKV for archiving or if you need broader codec and subtitle support.
