How to convert ABW to RTF
- Add your .ABW file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .RTF in a few seconds.
- Download your new .RTF file.
What to expect
- Text, headings, basic tables, and embedded images transfer reliably to
.rtf. - Complex AbiWord-specific formatting - such as advanced footnotes or table-of-contents styles - may simplify because RTF is a narrower format than ABW's XML model.
- If you only need the text content, an
.abwfile is plain XML you can open in any text editor without a converter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert ABW to RTF without installing AbiWord?
Yes - LibreOffice Writer opens
.abw natively and saves it as .rtf without needing AbiWord. Why does LibreOffice warn me when saving as RTF?
It flags formatting features that RTF cannot store exactly. For most documents this is harmless - click Keep Current Format to proceed.
Should I convert to RTF or DOCX?
DOCX is the better target unless the recipient specifically requires RTF; it preserves more formatting and produces smaller files.
Will images from the ABW file appear in the RTF?
Yes - both AbiWord and LibreOffice extract the base64-encoded images from the
.abw XML and embed them in the .rtf output.
