About Base64

Base64 writes data using just 64 safe characters (A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, plus + and /). It is not encryption, since anyone can decode it. It just lets data travel through channels that only expect plain text, like email, JSON, data URLs or config files.

Type text on the left and press Encode to get the Base64 version; paste Base64 on the right and press Decode to read it back. It runs in your browser, and text is handled as UTF-8, so accents and emoji survive the round trip.

Good to know

  • Base64 is encoding, not encryption, so never use it to hide anything.
  • The encoded text comes out about a third larger than the original.
  • It is handled as UTF-8, so non-English characters survive.
  • It runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?
No. It only rewrites data with a safe alphabet, and anyone can decode it instantly. Use real encryption if you need secrecy.
Why would I need Base64?
To move binary or special characters through text-only channels: embedding an image in CSS or HTML as a data URL, putting binary into JSON, or sending it in an email header.
Does it handle accents and emoji?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so characters outside plain ASCII come back correctly when you decode.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser, so the text never leaves your device.
