A file with the .xmcd extension stores a Mathcad worksheet document in XML format. Introduced with Mathcad 12 and 13 (around 2004-2005), .xmcd replaced the older binary .mcd format and remained the standard worksheet format through Mathcad 15. Each version of Mathcad can use a slightly different schema revision, but the developer offers dedicated format conversion tools to allow backward compatibility between releases. A compressed variant of the same format is saved with the .xmcdz extension - a plain ZIP archive wrapping the XML file. Since Mathcad Prime 1.0 (2011), .xmcd has been superseded by .mcdx, which uses an OOXML/ZIP-based container instead.
Mathcad
Mathcad, originally developed by Mathsoft and now maintained by Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC), is an advanced software package for mathematics and engineering calculations.
